Geriatric Therapy

Stay independent, balanced and pain-free as you age

45 minutes
8–12 visits, often Medicare-covered

Geriatric therapy at One Stop Rehab helps older adults stay strong, mobile, confident, and independent. Whether you are recovering from surgery, managing arthritis, feeling unsteady on your feet, or finding daily activities more difficult, we create a safe, personalized plan built around your goals.

Physical activity programs for adults age 65 and older should include aerobic activity, muscle strengthening, and balance work, with adjustments based on each person’s abilities and health needs.

We can help with

  • Balance problems, dizziness, and fear of falling
  • Frequent falls or a recent fall
  • Difficulty walking, climbing stairs, or getting in and out of a chair
  • General weakness, deconditioning, or reduced endurance
  • Arthritis-related pain, stiffness, and mobility limitations
  • Joint replacement or other post-operative recovery
  • Recovery after hospitalization or illness
  • Osteoporosis-related mobility and strength concerns
  • Parkinson’s disease, stroke recovery, neuropathy, or other neurologic conditions
  • Chronic back, neck, hip, knee, shoulder, foot, or ankle pain
  • Safe use of walkers, canes, braces, or other mobility equipment
  • Returning to household tasks, exercise, community activities, or hobbies

What patients can expect

Your first visit

  • A detailed assessment of your strength, flexibility, walking pattern, balance, endurance, pain, and mobility
  • A review of your medical history, medications, and prior falls
  • A discussion of your home environment and personal goals

Your treatment plan

Your plan may include:

  • Strengthening for the legs, hips, core, and upper body
  • Walking and gait training
  • Balance and fall-prevention training
  • Sit-to-stand, stair, and transfer practice
  • Flexibility and joint-mobility exercises
  • Endurance and activity-tolerance training
  • Education on safe use of assistive devices
  • Home-safety and fall-risk reduction recommendations
  • A practical home exercise plan
  • Family or caregiver education when appropriate

Balance and strength-focused exercise can reduce fall risk, and a physical therapist can tailor a program to the person’s current mobility, safety needs, and goals.

Our Goals

At One Stop Rehab, progress is based on what matters in real life. Your goals may include:

  • Walking safely at home, in the community, or on uneven ground
  • Getting up from a chair with less difficulty
  • Moving more confidently on stairs
  • Improving strength for carrying groceries or completing household tasks
  • Reducing fall risk and fear of falling
  • Returning to church, social events, gardening, exercise, or travel
  • Maintaining independence for as long as possible

Fall Prevention

For example, if getting out of a low chair has become difficult, therapy may include leg and hip strengthening, sit-to-stand practice, balance training, and strategies to make home movement safer.

Falls are not always an unavoidable part of aging. We can help identify modifiable contributors such as weakness, reduced balance, walking changes, poor footwear, environmental trip hazards, difficulty using a mobility device, or fear-driven reductions in activity.

Johns Hopkins recommends discussing falls and exercise changes with a healthcare professional, as well as reviewing the home for trip hazards.
